About Chicoree GSP's
MEET FRED RYAN, DVM
In the spring of 1968 our family moved to western Kansas where there were plenty of pheasants. That fall my brothers and I hunted for the first time. The following spring we took a trip to Quinter, Kansas and bought our first German Shorthaired Pointer. That fall I went to college and would hunt when I had a chance. After Veterinary school, I stated practicing in northwest Ohio. I had a strong interest in breeding top quality GSP's, but had no idea where to start. In the fall of 1980 parvovirus hit the area and a local breeder, Lowell Edwards, called the practice about a vaccination program for his dogs. The following spring he brought a litter of 10 liver Shorthairs (DC Esser’s Duke VD Wildburg X Diehls Tessie) into the practice and I went home with the eventual FC AFC Ryan’s Carrie Ann. That fall, Lowell with Chicoree Hickory Doc and I, with Carrie, went to fun trials. I was amazed how much drive and point she had compared to my first Shorthair. Lowell thought she would do well as a field trial dog and introduced me to Dan Anderson and serious field trialing began. After Carrie’s first litter I used the prefix Chicoree’s for my dogs because Lowell’s health prevented him from field trialing. My goal was and still is to breed for a national all age champion. Over the years my knowledge level has increased and I have produced multiple Field Champions (FC), Amateur Field Champions (AFC), American Field Champions, 2 NGSPA Runner Up National All Age Champions, and 1 NGPDA All Age Champion. FC Chicoree’s Cherry Cola produced National FC Heidi Ho MRT who was delivered by c-section at the clinic. Also every year except for its first year, I have bred or owned one or more dogs that have been invited to the NGSPA Shooting Dog Invitational, with Chicoree’s What A Hoodlum winning in 2013. The last 10 years since Dan DiMambro of Monkeyshine Kennels has trained my dogs, they have become nationally competitive. With excellent breeding and Dan’s development program I plan to continue to pursue the goal of producing all age champions.
